Wampun Town Chapel

We love living here since we moved from northern Vermont to rural western Pennsylvania. People are very friendly and welcoming here. The town of Wampum is the first settlement that was officially organized in Lawrence County about 225 years ago. The early settlers found that the native residents here wore a belt around the waste that held all their money which they called “Wampum”. So, the settlers used that word for the name of the new Borough (or township). We also have another name for this town, which is also called “New Beaver”.  Many towns here have been named for some sort of Beaver or other. It’s a bit confusing to keep track of geography here. For a good source of local information, please browse to this URL:  Wampum Borough – Since 1796

For accommodations many people stay at one of three motels located on the main highway Route 18 near Beaver Falls.  The room rental rates can change depending on the season and current demand for housing.  All the motels are very clean and well situated less than 10 miles drive from the Landell’s Studio Workshop on Main St. If you prefer to stay in a private home through AIRBNB, browse to the website and punch in the zip code (16157) and the dates you need accommodations. There are many lovely homes that offer kitchens for you to prepare your own meals, and they also include a breakfast menu prepared by the hosts.

The Landells’ home is close to the workshop.  We would welcome you to visit our home for a meal together and perhaps some chamber music in our large Music Room, which features a Steinway Grand Piano.  We offer this space to flutists who would like to decide which of the 16 Head Joints that I offer in the “Array” of heads, which I made specifically for this purpose.  If you have read the pages in the “Current Information” brochure about the Array, you know that this group of head joints should be used as a tool to allows us to find exactly the right size ‘cut’ for your head joint to match your physical abilities and your preferred tone quality.  After we have spent at least an hour playing the set of heads in the Array, you should be able to decide which size and shape embouchure cut is the best match for your artistic and practical abilities.  Using that head joint as the master pattern, I can make a new head joint with your preferred choice of metals with exactly the same cut as the one you decided was best.  That process usually takes about a week or two depending on my current schedule of work.

Travel to Wampum

From any distant part of the world you should plan to arrive at Pittsburgh International Airport, where you could rent a car and drive about an hour north to Wampum.  There is a toll road along the way which is said to be “Cashless”, because they have set up unmanned tolling stations that will bill every traveler by mail using the license plate of the car or by using the “Easy Pass” system, which requires you to have the Transponder set up with your credit card at the rental office for the rental car.  If you plan to come by air and you don’t have an international driver’s license, it’s possible that I can come to the airport when you arrive, and I’ll drive you to your B&B and pick you up in the morning for your visit to my shop.  That would require an extra cost for that service, but I don’t mind helping out if driving a car isn’t possible for you while you’re here.

If you plan to drive here on your own, that is most convenient because we don’t have public transportation in this rural area. It may be possible to arrange for an UBER driver to take you around, but it would be very expensive and inconvenient because of the distance. There may be some local campground that would have a place to set up a tent in the summer time, but again you’ll need a car to get around.

How Did Wampum Get Its Name?

The original native tribe living in the area of the so-called “Beaver” River are said to have worn belts around their waists that they used to keep their money, which they called “Wampum”. When the English began to settle there, they borrowed that word to name their town. See Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wampum for more info.
